This Is What VAT in Nigeria’s Tax Reform Means for Average Nigerians and Small Businesses

The federal government has unveiled new provisions in the tax reform, stating that from January 1, 2026, essential items such as staple foods, rent, education, healthcare, and public transport will become zero-rated or exempt from the 7.5 % VAT rate, while small businesses with turnovers below ₦100 million will no longer be required to charge VAT.
